Former Residence of Lafcadio Hearn 小泉八雲旧居

昨日は病みあがりというのに、坂の多いロングライドに挑戦してしまったので、昨夜は宿に着きシャワーを浴びてそのまま寝てしまい朝まで目が醒めることが無かった。かなり疲れていたのだろう。今日は天草に移動しようと思っていたが、疲れているのと、旅日記がかなり溜まって来ているので、旅日記を書くことに集中することにした。旅日記を書くことは全然苦にはならないし、書くことにより、色々な勉強もでき、自分の理解度も確認できる、書いている最中に、多くの気付きもある。もう10ヵ月もこの生活を続けており、ただ、毎日走り色々なところを次から次へのスタイルから、じっくり見て消化しようとのスタイルに変わって来ている。このパターンが今の自分の生活そのものになって来ている。旅というところから生活自体になって来たという事だ。こう言生活か、それであればホームレス“状態で無く”、立派なホームレスとなっているのかとも思う。まあ、それはそれで良いか。

I felt this morning so tired as I made a long ride yesterday after I thought I had been recovered from cold. It was too much for my condition yesterday. Therefore, I decided to take rest again visiting some places nearby and edit my journal. 10 months have passed already after I started my journey visiting several places. I was trying to visit places as many as possible every day as a traveler. Recently that journey style is changing. Travel becomes my day to day life. If I visit so many places in a day, it seem I could not digest what I see and what I feel which I try to record in journal. So, I changed the style limiting places to visit as far as I really can digest with a theme. My life is almost homeless life but with total satisfaction.

今日も、公園で2時間程、昼寝をした。やはり疲れているのだろう。その後は、市内に小泉八雲の旧居が公開されていたのでそこにいった。子供の頃、恐る恐る「怪談」を読んだ。後で、イギリス人の作品と知りビックリした。きめ細やかな描写で本当に怖い。今まで読んだ作家のホラーものより遥かに日本的な怖さが表現されていると思う。どんな人なのか興味がある。

I made a nap again in the park near accommodation in lunch time. It seems I am really tired. After nap, I have visited the former house of Lafcadio Hearn, English novelist who came Japan 140 years ago, married with a Japanese lady, changed his nationality to Japanese and died in Japan. He loved Japan and understood Japanese fork essence better than ordinary Japanese at time. He did an excellent job in novels and essay about Japan and Japanese culture which were introduced to western world. I read, in my childhood, his book “Kaidan” Japanese traditional horror stories. It was a great surprise to know later this was written by non-Japanese. That story shows lots of Japanese tradition and life implications behind the story. He expressed in his own way exactly what old Japanese thought and treated such horror anecdotal story.

町の繁華街のど真ん中にあった。こんな所に住んでいたのかと思ったが、移設されて現在地にあるのだ。まさかこんな場所にと思っていたのだが、元の場所も歩いてそれほどの距離で無く、修復中の平御櫓の近くだった。繁華街からは離れている。熊本は地方都市らしく、市街地でも少し離れれば静かな所がいくつもある。

His former house is found in a central Part of Kumamoto City, which was a surprise he lived in a so crowded place. But this house was moved an reproduced from actual place. Then I checked and visit the place where this house really existed. It was not so far from there. But very quite still. Kumamoto is the second largest city in Kyushu but not like Tokyo. It still maintains old atmosphere even 10 minutes from a central of Kumamoto City.

小泉八雲と夏目漱石とは微妙な関係にある事がこの旧居にある資料館で乗っていた。少し面白い話と思いここで紹介しておく。この二人は熊本に住んでいたが、時期は重ならず、お互いの面識はない。職歴は夏目漱石が小泉八雲の後を追いかけているようになっている。八雲が日本に新聞社の特派員として松江で生活を開始して一年目に熊本に移って来た。松江の寒さに耐えられるなかったのと、新聞社とのトラブルで退職、松江で結婚、もう少し給料の良いところという事で、熊本の第五高等学校の英語教師として採用された。三年勤め熊本を去った。この第五高等学校の英語教師に後釜が漱石だった。事あることに、八雲と比較され精神的にも落ち込んだそうだ。この頃から漱石は

八雲を意識するようになった。八雲が東京帝国大学に勤め去って行った後、また漱石が、東京帝国大学にで仕事を始めた。この頃は文筆活動を双方ともやっており、漱石は八雲のスタイルに対して独自のスタイルを追いかけていた。漱石の発展は八雲に対する反骨精神大いに寄与しているように思える。最も八雲はそんな事は全く知らず、マイペースだったのだろう。こういう事は世間ではよくある話だ。

One interesting thing was explained in this house. Very delicate relationship with Soseki Natsume, one of most famous and popular novelist in Japan who lived the same time of Lafcadio Hearn. They never met to each other in their life. Soseki followed Hearn’s job careers. Soseki became an English teacher just after Hearn resigned this job in Kumamoto. Also, in latter days, Soseki became a professor in Tokyo University just after Hearn’s leave. Soseki was always compared with Hearn and suffered by inferior complex and paranoid. Soseki deemed Hearn as his rival. He tried to create his own novel style different from Hearn. In some sense, Hearn was a person who influenced Soseki most.

今日1日が終わるのだが、旅日記は追いつかなかった。明日天草に行くと益々溜まてしまうので、明明日も熊本に滞在して、残りの旅日記を書くことにしよう。
